Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi have been linked for two decades. They played basketball together at UConn and helped the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team win five gold medals. Now the basketball greats will appear on the cover of the NBA 2K23 WNBA edition video game, which will be released on Sept. 9. It’s the second straight year that the video game will feature a WNBA athlete on one of its covers. Candace Parker was the cover athlete last year.

Paris fashion week has geared up a notch with theatrical performances in historic courtyards and jewels adorning supernatural creations. Fashionistas meanwhile prepared for Olivier Rousteing’s one-off turn as designer at Jean Paul Gaultier for Wednesday's evening show. Gaultier himself retired from couture in January 2020 after 50 years. There was something shamanic in the air at Elie Saab, as the Lebanese designer fused his usual show-stopping fare with the supernatural in rare co-ed show. And French couturier and lover of art and theater Franck Sorbier took his audience back in time to a Renaissance universe of court jesters, fairytale maidens and cantering horses.

A new UN report says world hunger rose in 2021, with around 2.3 billion people facing moderate or severe difficulty obtaining enough to eat. And that was before the Ukraine war which has sparked increases in the cost of grain, fertilizer and energy.  “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” was published by five U.N. agencies on Wednesday and it paints a grim picture, based on 2021 data. It says the statistics “should dispel any lingering doubts that the world is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms.”

A Lebanese minister says the government hopes to start repatriating Syrian refugees within months. Lebanon hosts over 1 million Syrian refugees who fled the decade-old conflict, but the authorities say that has worsened the country's crippled economy. Issam Charafeddine, the Lebanese Minister of the Displaced, told The Associated Press in an interview that the Syrian government has guaranteed security for refugees returning to safe areas, and that he is scheduled to visit Damascus next week. The United Nations opposes involuntary returns to Syria. Rights groups say they have documented cases of arrests, torture, and other human rights violations to refugees who are returned to Syria.

Somalia’s president has called for assistance from Turkey to combat the effects of severe drought that is threatening the Horn of Africa. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made the comments Wednesday during his first visit to Turkey since returning to office following an election in May. The two countries have forged close ties over the past decade. Some areas of the Horn of Africa could be declared in famine within weeks because of the driest drought in the region in decades. Russia's war in Ukraine has abruptly drawn millions of dollars away from other crises and Somalia, facing a food shortage largely driven by the war, might be the most vulnerable. Turkish President Recep said Turkey’s humanitarian and development assistance to Somalia in the past decade has exceeded $1 billion.

A top Russian official has warned the U.S. that it could face the “wrath of God” if it pursues efforts to help establish an international tribunal to investigate Russia’s action in Ukraine. Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council chaired by President Vladimir Putin and former Russian president, denounced the U.S. for what he described as its efforts to “spread chaos and destruction across the world.” Medvedev cited the Apocalypse to warn the U.S. not to try to push the war crimes investigations against Russia. Medvedev, once seen by the West as a liberal, has made a series of hawkish statements.

Stocks are inching higher at the open on Wall Street Wednesday, tracking markets in Europe. The S&P 500 is up 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite is up 0.3%. The euro is at a 20-year low to the dollar on worries over disruptions to energy supplies. Amazon is down 1.3% amid news that Britain’s competition watchdog is investigating possible unfair trading practices.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, one of the nation’s wealthiest philanthropies, announced a $1.5 billion effort designed to help scientists of color advance in their careers. This is one of several diversity, equity and inclusion programs that some of the nation’s largest grantmakers and health charities are undertaking. Other grantmakers are working to change their practices to ensure scholars of color are more likely to get philanthropic and government support to further their work. Yet many grantmakers and health charities say their own progress has been lagging, and they are joining forces to do more.

The recent killing of a Black teenager by the police in Cuba, and the disturbing details caught on video, have drawn rare attention to police brutality and racial discrimination on the island.

Florida is accustomed to Gov. Ron DeSantis volunteering his opinions on the political issues of the day, often telegraphing his plans for future state policy decisions during news conferences.

Massachusetts’ highest court is hearing arguments in a Republican challenge to mail-in voting, which the state GOP contends is unconstitutional. The state Supreme Judicial Court is holding a hearing Wednesday in the state Republican Party’s challenge to the VOTES Act. The voting rights bill Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law late last month makes mail-in ballots and early voting permanent fixtures in Massachusetts elections. The GOP argues mail ballots are “vulnerable to fraud.” Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin, a Democrat whose office oversees elections, responded in legal filings that the GOP lawsuit offers “nothing more than unsupported theories.”

WASHINGTON — Some voters in last month’s special election to replace former Rep. Jeff Fortenberry in Nebraska’s 1st District won’t be represented by the Republican who won, Mike Flood, until January — and only if Flood wins again in November.

WASHINGTON — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Independence Day Florida ad has vaulted him deep into the national conversation about the 2024 presidential race as Democrats on social media hail him as a tell-it-like-it-is stalwart.

Britain’s beleaguered Prime Minister Boris Johnson is fighting for his political future, after two of his top Cabinet ministers walked out of their jobs and a string of more junior ministers resigned following months of political chaos. Many opponents, including those within his own Conservative Party, have openly called for Johnson to go. But he has shown no sign of quitting, and it may be up to a powerful Conservative group known as the 1922 Committee to oust him before the next general election. Under current party rules, a year must pass before another formal leadership challenge can take place. But the committee has the power to change the rules to allow a fresh confidence vote sooner.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned his ruling Conservative MPs that he’ll “keep going” in the face of calls for him to quit, as plotters in his party gather to discuss a potential new confidence vote amid a fresh wave of ministerial resignations.

DALTON, Ga. — Margaret Rhodes walked into a Democratic rally in a crowded North Georgia gym with an accessory: an aging abortion rights button she wore to show her disdain for the U.S. Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

U.S. dog lovers, say “benvenuto” to the bracco Italiano. The ancient Italian bird dog is the 200th member of the American Kennel Club’s roster of recognized breeds. The organization announced the development Wednesday. Now, the handsome, powerful but amiable hunters can now go for best in show at many U.S. dog shows, including the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club event next year. The AKC says the bracco (pronounced BRAH’-koh) goes back more than two millennia in Europe but wasn’t brought to the U.S. until the mid-1990s. It's a medium-to-large dog that's supposed to be adapted to all types of hunting, reliable, docile and intelligent.

Tens of thousands of migrants, who have been living in Germany for years without a secure stay permit, will be eligible for permanent residency due to a new migration bill. The new regulation which was passed by the German Cabinet on Wednesday applies to about 136,000 people who have lived in Germany for at least five years by Jan. 1, 2022. They can first apply for a one-year-residency status and subsequently apply for permanent residency in Germany, if they earn enough money to make an independent living in the country, speak German, and are well integrated. According to the new bill, asylum seekers will all be eligible for language classes and skilled laborers will be allowed to bring along their families if they move to Germany for work.

Hurricane Bonnie has weakened after becoming the first major storm of the eastern Pacific season off southern Mexico, and it's not seen as a threat to land. Bonnie was moving farther away from Mexico’s Pacific coast Wednesday, four days after crossing Central America as a tropical storm from the Caribbean and dropping heavy rain, that contributed to at least two deaths. Bonnie grew into a Category 3 hurricane Tuesday before losing a little power. Forecasters expect it to keep heading generally westward into the open sea. But the U.S. National Hurricane Center says Bonnie caused rough surf along Mexico’s southwestern coast.

Conditions in the Italian Alps were too unstable Wednesday for search teams and dogs to work on the mountain where five people remained missing after a fatal weekend avalanche. Seven people were killed after an enormous chunk of a glacier on Marmolada mountain broke off Sunday. It sent an avalanche of ice and rocks thundering across a trail where hikers were enjoying warm, sunny weather. Rescuers say they hope the temperature will dip Thursday, lessening the risk of more avalanches. A prosecutor told Italian state radio Wednesday that he's opened a formal investigation to determine if any negligence was involved. But he says it appears the avalanche couldn’t have been anticipated.

HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. — Members of the Highland Park community came together to grieve Tuesday after seven people were killed and more than two dozen others injured in a mass shooting during the town’s Independence Day parade.

Guitar icon Carlos Santana collapsed on stage during a show in Michigan and was rushed to a hospital, later blaming the episode on forgetting to eat or drink water. Santana, 74, was “doing well” Wednesday after being taken from his show at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, some 40 miles northwest of Detroit, to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation Tuesday night, manager Michael Vrionis in a statement. “Just taking it easy,” the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer posted to Facebook just after midnight. “Forgot to eat and drink water so I dehydrated and passed out. Blessings and miracles to you all.”

Olympic triple jump champion Yulimar Rojas cannot compete in long jump at the world championships in Oregon this month because her qualifying leap was done in unapproved shoes. Track and field’s governing body World Athletics says a long jump by Rojas in Spain was invalid because she wore triple jump shoes. Those can have a sole 25 millimeters thick but the limit is 20 for long jump. World Athletics says injury prevented Rojas competing again to get a valid qualifying jump. The 26-year-old Venezuelan is the two-time defending world champion in triple jump.
