SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - A drive-thru coffee shops opened in Shelbyville.

Oliver Coffee Co. opened June 15 and already the shop has a few regular customers. Owners Tom and Hannah Shoaff moved to Shelbyville in March 2020 and had a baby in April. Hannah told WAND News it was a challenge to get coffee because there weren't any drive-thru coffee places in town.

"As a new mom, especially in COVID, I was like there is no place for a coffee shop to just drive-thru, so I told him if no one is going to open one we should," said Hannah.

Tom, a Shelbyville native, said he wasn't completely on board for the idea. The couple has their own wedding photography/videography business, but he didn't think adding a coffee shop to the mix was the best idea.

"I said no initially. I was like no, we don't need that Shelbyville isn't big enough for that," he said. "But then I started thinking about what she was actually saying more and more and I was like ok, she's right."

The couple did a lot of research before starting. One of their plans was use a recycled storage container as the building for their business. Tom said recycled storage containers are popular on the west coast, but they didn't know how it would go in central Illinois. The couple reached out to a shop in Vandalia, asked questions and knew the container would work.

"It's just something different. It catches your eye when you drive by," said Hannah.

The Shoaff's said they want the shop to be a community business. They plan to invite local youth groups, artists and food trucks to the location on West Main Street. It will be open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Oliver Coffee Company plans to monthly drink specials, as well.

The Shoaff's said they couldn't have accomplished the goal of opening the business without help from the community. The couple specifically wanted to mention: Josh Boehm Construction, Hardy Heating and Plumbing, Holland and Holland Masonry, Heath Young, Steve Wagner, R & B Electric, Quinton Reedy, John Diss, John Marcin, SCSB, Jamie Stang, Drew Hansen, Joe Sippers and Emily Debenham .

Hannah added the successful open was due in part to their employees and credited their hard work to making everything run smooth.
