Alex Wood took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 to stop a seven-game slide. Yermín Mercedes hit an early two-run single, and four Giants pitchers combined on a three-hitter to snap Chicago’s six-game winning streak. An umpire’s ruling that appeared to give the Cubs a break instead contributed to San Francisco’s three-run third. Wood allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking two. His no-hit bid ended in the seventh on Ian Happ's leadoff single. Two outs later, Patrick Wisdom belted his 18th homer of the season.

DENVER — The Los Angeles Dodgers opened an eight-game trip Thursday with a 13-0 blowout of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

The Biden administration likes to say Russia is now isolated internationally because of its invasion of Ukraine. Yet its top officials are hardly cloistered in the Kremlin, and now the U.S. wants to talk. President Vladimir Putin has been meeting with world leaders recently, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose country is a NATO member. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is jetting around the world and posing for photos with foreign leaders. This week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he wants to end months of top-level U.S. diplomatic estrangement with Lavrov to discuss the release of American detainees in Russia as well as issues related to Ukraine.

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants entered Thursday’s game looking for anything to snap their seven-game losing streak.

The surprise deal by Senate Democrats on a pared-down bill to support families, boost infrastructure and fight climate change is likely to jump-start sales of electric vehicles. The measure agreed to by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and holdout Sen. Joe Manchin would give EV buyers a $7,500 tax credit starting next year, through the end of 2032. There’s also a new $4,000 credit for those buying used EVs. The vehicles have to be assembled in North America, and there are limits on annual income for buyers. There also are caps on the sticker prices of new EVs and a $25,000 cap on the price that can be paid for used electric vehicles.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani has come up empty twice in his bid for history.

Wimbledon tennis finalist Nick Kyrgios’ court date to face a common assault charge has been postponed by three weeks. The charge relates to an incident in January 2021 that was reported to Australian Capital Territory police in December. Kyrgios was initially expected to face ACT Magistrates Court on Aug. 2 — next Tuesday. But court officials said the case would be now be heard on Aug. 23. Kyrgios is not required to attend that court session if he is legally represented.

Nathaniel Lowe homered and tripled, and Corey Seager had an RBI double among his three hits off Shohei Ohtani in the Texas Rangers’ 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani racked up 11 strikeouts in his sixth consecutive start with double-digit whiffs, but the AL MVP also yielded eight hits and two runs over six innings in his second consecutive loss. Seager left the game with a bruise on his lower right leg during the sixth inning. Spencer Howard pitched five innings of three-hit ball for the Rangers, who snapped a three-game skid.

Diana Taurasi scored 30 points, Skylar Diggins-Smith added 27 and the Phoenix Mercury rolled to a 90-80 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks. Taurasi added six rebounds, while Diggins-Smith grabbed five with six assists for Phoenix (13-16). Shey Peddy scored 12 as the Mercury won their second straight and moved into third place in the Western Conference — passing Los Angeles and Dallas, both at 12-16. Diggins-Smith, Taurasi and Peddy accounted for 23 of 26 first-quarter points as the Mercury took a nine-point lead. Taurasi and Diggins-Smith teamed up to score the first 16 points in the second quarter as Phoenix pushed its lead to 42-22 at the 6:22 mark and never looked back. Chennedy Carter led the Sparks with a season-high 23 points off the bench.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin had been wrestling for more than a year over President Joe Biden’s big rebuilding America package. But talks had jammed up — again. With the midterm elections near, control of Congress at stake, the president and his party were at the end of the line. Tempers flared. Manchin also faced pressure and was publicly assailed as single-handedly holding up Biden's agenda. Schumer and Manchin met one more time, 10 days ago, in a basement room at the Capitol. A new offer was on the table: the $739 billion package now headed toward votes in Congress. Here's a look at how it happened.

The resignation of a county elections clerk in a rural county in Nevada has opened a window into the long-term consequences of election conspiracy theories. Officials in Nye County have recommended scrapping voting machines in favor of hand-counting all ballots — which would be more than 20,000 in a typical general election. The leading candidate to replace the veteran clerk is someone who denies the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and says he is willing to hand-count all ballots instead of using electronic tabulators. Experts warn that could increase the likelihood of human error, delay results and create chaos in future elections.

Bobby Edward Fort enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1994 and retired 22 years later with a secret security clearance that allowed him to land a job in Honolulu as a defense contractor. But the real Bobby Fort was dead. The man who enlisted as Fort was held without bail Thursday on charges he stole the dead baby’s identity 35 years ago. Federal prosecutors say Walter Glenn Primrose and his wife had been fraudulently living for decades under the stolen identities of two dead Texas infants. Primrose's lawyer says the prosecutor only provided speculation and innuendo the couple was involved in more nefarious offenses than nonviolent crimes.

Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer early, and his tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth inning led the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Bregman was shaken up in a collision while scoring the Astros’ final run in the eighth, but he remained in the game. The victory snapped a three-game skid after the Astros suffered their first series sweep of the season by Oakland to start the week.

Tyler Anderson and two relievers — including infielder Hanser Alberto — combined on a seven-hitter, and the Los Angeles Dodgers used another quick start to rout the sloppy Colorado Rockies 13-0. Trea Turner had three hits for Los Angeles, including a three-run double. Gavin Lux also had three hits, and Will Smith finished with two hits and three RBIs. A day after racing to a 6-0 first-inning lead against Washington, the MLB-leading Dodgers scored two runs in the first and four in the second against José Ureña. LA’s 10th win in 12 games extended its NL West lead to a season-high 12 games over San Diego.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — It was business as usual in the Angels clubhouse on Thursday before their home series opener with the Texas Rangers. Music streamed through the clubhouse, players and staff milled in and out between the field and the lockers, casual conversation carried on. But given the ti…

HOUSTON — Even if hasn’t been like the domination of past seasons, where trying beat the Astros in just one game felt like solving some complicated equation that didn’t have an answer, the frustration remains the same for the Mariners.

A Colorado county clerk and election conspiracy theorist will get a recount of her failed bid for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State. Tina Peters said she raised the $256,000 needed to pay for the recount. So the Secretary of State's office says it'll perform the recount by Aug. 4. Peters lost her primary by more than 85,000 votes. She insisted there were signs of fraud. She demanded a hand recount but the Secretary of State's office said that was against the rules. So she will get one done on the election machines that tallied the initial votes.

The first-place New York Mets have acquired outfielder Tyler Naquin and left-handed reliever Phillip Diehl from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade for two minor leaguers. Cincinnati receives outfielder Hector Rodríguez and right-hander Jose Acuña. Naquin, a first-round draft pick 10 years ago, was batting .246 with seven homers and 33 RBIs in 56 games for the struggling Reds, who are last in the NL Central. He homered and drove in two runs Thursday in a 7-6 loss to Miami. As the NL East leaders look to add offense, he provides another left-handed bat and depth in the outfield.
